Recover the Mexican Wolf

  • af: Nancy L Kaminski

The recovery plan for the newly reintroduced Mexican wolf of Arizona and New Mexico is outdated. The old recovery plan is from 1982. The reintroduction of this magnificent wolf has been hampered by the lack of a new recovery plan. The goal when the first eleven Mexican wolves were released in 1998 was 100 wolves in the wild by 2008. Year end numbers in 2008 showed only 52 wolves and two breeding pairs. Without help from our leaders in the Interior Department and the Fish and Wildlife Service this reintroduction effort will continue to falter.
