Save Australia's Cape York from Mining!

Unless the country moves to designate four national heritage sites that would forever protect the beauty of Australia's Cape York, six new mines could soon deface the gorgeous peninsula.

Many Australian environmentalists fear that an incoming Liberal National Party will be repealing green space protections and open the cape to mining. Of particular concern is mining company Rio Tinto's proposed $1.4 million bauxite mine expansion, which would compromise the Great Barrier Reef.

Even the United Nations has sounded an alarm about the threat that mining and shipping poses to the Great Barrier Reef. Tell Australia's national leaders to enact emergency national heritage sites in Cape York, as recommended by the Wilderness Society.
We the undersigned demand that you act quickly to protect Cape York and its distinctive natural resources by issuing emergency national heritage designations to the four sites proposed for mining. Mining has a long and tragic history of devastating waterways, wildlife, and communities. In particular, Rio Tinto's proposed expansion of a bauxite mine threatens great harm to the Great Barrier Reef. You should listen to the many environmental groups and the United Nations who all oppose these proposed mines.
