The Gowanus Canal had been polluted for decades. The time to clean up the canal is now. It has recently been declared a Superfund site a title reserved only for the most polluted sites in the United States. This petition would urge congress to provide funding to the Superfund by renewing the Superfund tax which taxes the polluting companies.

We the undersigned, wish to express our support for the cleanup of the Gowanus Canal. The Gowanus canal had been a dumping ground for decades. Currently sewage flows into the canal from the municipal's combined sewer overflow system.

The renewal of the Superfund tax of 1980, which expired in 1995, would help clean up this Superfund site. Since 2003 the Superfund had been bankrupted and this had hindered the Superfund from cleaning up Superfund sites. The taxes would allow the Superfund to continue their activities which were effective shown in the cleanup of the Superfund site the Love Canal.

We ask that the United States Congress to correct this totally unacceptable condition by passing a bill to address this issue.
