Coal River Mountain is one of the last mountains left intact in the beautiful Coal River Valley of West Virginia. However, Massey Energy has plans to mine 6,000 acres of the mountain - or almost 10 square miles via mountaintop Removal. The proposed mining would bury over 20 miles of streams with valley fills, contaminate local water resources, put local communities in further danger of flash floods, and completely eliminate the available wind resource.
Fortunately, there is an alternative to mountaintop removal mining on Coal River Mountain %u2013 wind power. This is a unique opportunity to move our nation and the state of West Virginia toward the production of clean energy, and to preserve God's creation for generations to come. The Christian community has become increasingly vocal in the biblical call of environmental stewardship and thereby very supportive of alternative energy resources.
Tell Gov. Manchin that it is important to your faith and the people of southern WV that he halt the destruction Coal River Mountain and support the Coal River Wind Project.
Dear Governor Manchin,
The Christian community has become increasingly vocal in the biblical call of environmental stewardship and thereby very supportive of the implementation of alternative energy resources. This movement has especially taken interest in southern West Virginia, more specifically in Coal River Mountain and in the Coal River Wind Project. This past November, over 40 representatives of various churches and Christian colleges across the nation joined together to see the impacts of mountaintop removal coal mining on the land and communities of southern West Virginia. They learned of the alternative to the destruction of Coal River Mountain through the execution of the Coal River Wind Project and are currently voicing their support through action at their respective churches and campuses across the nation.
A coalition between Restoring Eden and Christians for the Mountains has been formed under their shared national and local support of the Coal River Wind Project. Restoring Eden, a national Christian environmental organization doing international work, focuses their attention on halting mountaintop removal efforts in West Virginia. Christians for the Mountains, a local Christian environmental organization, works towards the same goal. We are dedicated to being ethical stewards of God's creation, especially in the communities of southern West Virginia.
Support of the Coal River Wind Project pertains to our faith in several different ways:
This project is an excellent model for sustainable energy and will challenge and inspire others to follow in West Virginia%u2019s footsteps. This is a great opportunity for you to act on your commitment to renewable energy for the improvement and diversification of the local economy and community.
