The Region of Waterloo is expected to experience significant growth in the future, and one of the greatest challenges will be providing residents with viable sustainable transportation options.

Cycling is a sustainable transportation mode and provides an attractive alternative to driving. A bicycle share system is a bank of bicycles that can be picked up and dropped off at numerous points across an area. Successful bicycle sharing systems, such as those seen in Paris and Montreal, could be implemented in the Region of Waterloo and deliver a variety of benefits.

Benefits of Bicycle Sharing Systems:

- Replaces single occupant vehicle trips and reduce traffic congestion
- Complements walking and transit use, relieves pressure on at capacity transit lines
- Provides opportunity for physical activity, leading to various health benefits
- Improves air quality, as cycling emits zero greenhouse gas emissions
- Affordable and accessible, especially among students and low-income individuals
- Uses innovative technologies to reduce theft and create user-friendly systems
- Creates employment opportunities which focus on sustainability
- Fosters partnerships between organizations, businesses, and community groups

As one of the world's most innovative communities, it is crucial that the Region of Waterloo provide sustainable transportation choices to residents while setting a precedent for sustainability across the globe.
