Keep Sinclair Library open 24 hours
On September 15th, a 36% reduction in Sinclair Library hours effective October 1st was announced by the UH administration without seeking input from students. New weekday hours at Sinclair were to be reduced from 24 hours a day to 8 am–10 pm.
The administration cited high costs and low usage as reasons for the closure, but they did not provide any evidence of a recent increase in costs and their own data indicated that hundreds of weekly users would be impacted. Service industry personnel and student parents would be disproportionately affected.
After 180 students submitted testimony to ASUH protesting the closure, the administration announced on September 27 that new weekday hours at Sinclair would be extended until 2 am. They acknowledged that the students should have been consulted and that the data upon which they based their decision was insufficient. On September 29 they agreed to work on a plan to provide an alternate 24-hour study area but did not provide a timeline.
We’ve paid our tuition and student fees, but the administration still thinks they can take away the resources we paid for. We want 24-hour library access NOW. It’s our library, it’s our future.
