Help Save Endangered Birds: Update IUCN Red List Criteria!
The IUCN Red List, the world's most widely-used database of endangered species, ignores hundreds of birds that face immediate risk of extinction. This is because the IUCN's current criteria for classifying species as threatened has not been updated in 25 years. Their dated system doesn't use new geospatial mapping technologies, and therefore doesn't catch changes in habitat that affect species' survival.
According to Stuart L. Pimm, Doris Duke Professor of Conservation Ecology at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment, “By not incorporating this type of modern geospatial data directly into its assessments, the Red List may be seriously underestimating the number of species at risk and causing scientists and policymakers to overlook priority areas for conservation."
New research from Duke University scientists found that more than 200 bird species in rapidly-changing lands are now facing extinction, but they don't even appear as "threatened" on the IUCN Red List. Updating their criteria to include new mapping technology would help protect these birds.
