No OLF in Hale's Lake, Camden County
- af: Camden County
- mottagare: Honorable Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy
Hale's Lake in Camden County is a proposed site of a Navy Outlying Landing Field (OLF) that would serve the Master Jet Base at Oceana Naval Air Station located approximately 30 miles over the state line in Virginia Beach, VA. As proposed, the OLF would condemn thousands of acres and place agricultural restrictions on thousands more, removing the land from the county tax base. The gravity of opposition to the OLF needs to be demonstrated to the Navy because Hale's Lake remains an option despite NC General Assembly opposition legislation and being the only site that Navy studies showed had a winter waterfowl problem.
We, the undersigned, honor the men and women of the military and exert every effort to support them and their mission, however we are in disagreement with the United States Navy regarding any intent to locate an outlying landing field at Hale's Lake, Camden County in North Carolina.
North Carolina has been asked by your predecessors to suffer the consequences of an OLF while being deprived of the benefits that arise from the Master Jet Base in Hampton Roads. North Carolina congressional delegation and legislative leaders have formally opposed the OLF. Camden County commission, municipalities, chamber of commerce and citizens have passionately stated they do not want an OLF in their community.
In addition, there have been several environmental and economical reasons released that demonstrate why Hale's Lake is not the best suited site for all parties involved, including the United States Navy.
Please consider removing Hale's Lake, Camden County from the list of proposed sites for the Navy's OLF.
Thank you for you time.
