Protesting SD23 Bus Fees
Our school district's newly imposed $200 bus fees are in our view unjust. The decision was ill advised and ill timed. The effects of such a change is not only felt in the short term but beyond that, owing to the fact this measure has now opened up a new path for the system to further pass the weight of their own mistakes to the bent backs of our parents, and those after them. This is simply unacceptable, and it has created this petition
We the undersigned, wish to voice our opposition to the recently enacted bus fees. It is our view that these fees have been put in place without much care or consideration. The fact that a low number of constituents present at the board review of said proposal was taken as a sign as support for such a measure, justifies our action. Beyond exaggerated approval, there are overlooked financial issues such as, Visa credit card fees or the number of parents refusing to pay the fees. This opens up another issue, one of environmental concern, for potentially adding more cars on the road. The school bus serves 6000 students and has for many years allowed students to arrive at school quickly and safely. If the goal of education is to empower all, then there is no greater backwards policy. How can students be empowered if they cannot even arrive to school? Moyra Baxter a well known school trustee said "school buses are something people expect as part of a school system." We could not agree anymore. Thank you
