The Chinchillas Need to be Saved

Chinchillas (short-tailed and common) are endangered species.  It is estimated that there are only 10,000 left in the Chilean mountains, where they are native.  A total of 270, 148 chinchillas are in the world.

It has disappeared because of over-consumption: people wanted their fur to make luxury coats which takes 400 chinchillas to make and could sold for $100,000; Chile alone was exporting over half a million chinchilla skins a year in the 1900%u2019s to Britain, France, Germany, and the U.S.; the death toll would have been much higher because some would have been damaged or used there.  The population became so low that even illegal poaching became nonprofitable.  Now very few are alive most that are alive are in captivity, very few of them are in the wild.
