Why Hasn't the EU Banned Glyphosate, a Likely Carcinogenic Weedkiller, Yet?

You may have heard of glyphosate. It's the toxic chemical used in weedkillers like Monsanto's RoundUp, owned by German parent corporation Bayer. It's been implicated in scores of lawsuits, including over 200,000 claims that this product caused cancers, and in 2015, the World Health Organization declared it is likely carcinogenic (cancer-causing).

Despite this, it's still legal to sell and use in the European Union (EU), including on foods. In fact, the EU has approved the use of glyphosate within its borders until 2033! That's an outrageous period of time to allow this toxic chemical to keep poisoning the more than 450 million people who live in EU member states.

Sign the petition to demand that the EU finally ban this dangerous pesticide NOW!

Weedkillers like RoundUp are not only horrendous for our bodies, but they're also found everywhere and in everything. Research has discovered traces of it lingering on the foods we buy in the supermarket, including everyday products like cereals and oats, snacks, our water supplies, on children's playgrounds, in our bodies, and even in human sperm.

Luckily, some member states are implementing their own restrictions - though none of them have yet passed an outright ban. Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands are among those nations that have at least partially limited glyphosate's use.

One possible reason for the EU's negligence in protecting its citizens from glyphosate toxicity is that Bayer, the owner of Monsanto, is a German-owned company. Bayer has spent years lobbying Congress and state lawmakers in the US to prevent glyphosate bans and even to shield the corporation from legal liability for cancer. It's not impossible that Bayer is wielding similar lobby influence over EU leaders. The EU must not sell out to corporate interests - it must remember its obligation to protect public health!

Sign the petition to protect everyday people from poisoning by pesticide use! Don't let agricultural corporations' giant lobbying influence stop lawmakers in the EU from doing the right thing.
