IEP attendance. WHO? Parapros-Teachers

I have a 20 year old autistic son who attends Saginaw MI ISD for 16-26 year olds. I'm his legal guardian & at his most recent annual IEP the school principal did NOT allow us to invite his Parapros-aides who spend 20+ hours a week with him. When we requested to have them invited, the reasons were as follows:
    1. He has 8 aides, & staffing will not allow,(requested only 2 to attend)
    2. The aides are not TRAINED to be in IEP's
    3. The aides do not understand FERPA
    4. The information we share in the IEP with teacher & principal can be relayed to the aides
    5. The aides are too busy & have to attend to other students
    6. No other parent or student has requested an aide to attend the IEP
    7. We were told we can have the IEP meeting & if THEY determine the aides need to be at a separate meeting then they MIGHT allow another meeting however the likeliness of a meeting with aides would not occur

I have been on the board of a local autism orginazation & have ALWAYS encouraged parents/guardians to invite all the people that spend time with their kids/young adults at school to the IEP. The more input the better. MANY times our kids/young adults spend MORE time with an aide/parapros & they see MORE things going on with them, & also can offer positive & negative feedback that a teacher and principal cannot. Please take the time to offer your input if you find it beneficial for the aides to attend IEP meetings.
