California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson is hoping to close a loophole in a 1994 law that could allow offshore drilling in an oil field that's partially in state-controlled waters. Passage of her bill, SB 1096, could prevent another disaster like the tragic spill in 1969 that drenched Santa Barbara's coast in oil and killed thousands of sea birds, plus dolphins, sea lions and other wildlife.
Another tragedy could very well occur if California developer Bob Nunn gets his way. The businessman's latest project proposal would pump oil from beneath the ocean from Tranquillon Ridge. If Sen. Jackson's bill is passed, it would close the law's exception once and for all, preventing another environmental disaster before Nunn has a chance to drill.
