Demand action to save the rare elephants of Mali from the guns of poachers

Demand action to save the rare Gourma elephants of Mali from the guns of poachers!

The situation for the elephants of Northern Mali is desperate.

It is estimated that just 350-500 Gourma elephants, a rare breed exclusive to Mali, are left – and authorities believe that 19 elephants from the group have been killed for their tusks by poachers in the past month.

Rebel groups who have connections to smuggling rings have been linked to poaching in the region.

Officials from the Mali’s nature conservation division have expressed alarm at the situation and have asked the government to provide military support to protect the species.

The creation of joint patrols made up of both the military and rangers could help stop a massacre of the species - there are only 10 rangers covering about 1.25 million hectares of the elephant’s habitat.

The Mali government needs to take action now to prevent the decimation of the Gourma elephants.

Please sign and share the petition to ask the Mali government to provide military support to help protect the Gourma elephants from the guns of poachers.
