Mass elephant extinction within 25 years - the EU must act now!

The African Elephant Coalition (AEC) has warned of mass elephant extinction within 25 years if urgent action isn't taken to crack down on the ivory trade with a total ban. Please sign this petition to ask the European Commission to commit to a full ivory ban. We have to act NOW to save one of the most beloved, unique and socially intelligent animals known to planet earth.

Wildlife officials in nearly 30 African states say the EU decision to oppose a comprehensive global ban on the ivory trade is a devastating blow to elephant conservation. Numbers of wild elephants have dropped from 600,000 to 400,000 during the time period of the debate alone.

In a position paper released on 1st July, the European Commission rejected an all-out ivory ban. Instead it suggested it would be better to encourage countries with growing elephant numbers to “sustainably manage” their populations. But the African Elephant Coalition (AEC),  which is a coalition of 29 African states, says Africa's elephants face mass extinction within 25 years unless elephants are given an ‘Annex I’ Cites listing which would ban any future ivory trade.

Please sign this petition and demand that Head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, rethink the refusal of an ivory ban in light of the urgency of the situation. The loss of African elephants is a global responsibilty and would be a global tragedy if we allow it to happen. If enough people sign, it will be clear that we want the European Commission to act responsibly and save this beautiful, irreplaceable animal. Please help us take a stand for global conservation!
