It has recently come to light that the majority of the entire senior class of CUNY Queens College Environmental Studies students whom are expected to graduate in the spring of 2017 are in danger of not graduating due to the lack of required courses needed to graduate not being offered this spring semester.
Our college released the final list of spring courses, however the natural science courses, which are a requirement to graduate are not being offered. The department will not offer the classes until the fall and as a result, we will very likely not graduate this spring.
This is already interfering with our post-graduation plans. Some of the seniors have made plans to join the military, some have taken the GRE in preparation for graduate school, others have no way to pay for more semesters of college due to the inability to take out more loans. It has been a great struggle for many of us to obtain a 4 year degree at all, much less within 4 years. Some of us left full time-jobs to finish school and are relying on graduating this year to resume our lives.
We are very disappointed with the college and our department. This is unacceptable and we request that either one of three solutions are reached:
1. Offer the classes required to the seniors in the spring semester, or even the winter semester.
2. Allow the seniors to take a natural science at another CUNY college and count it towards the major requirement.
3. Waive the requirement since the lack of offerings make it impossible for students to satisfy it.
Please sign our petition! We worked hard to graduate. Many of us have between 3.3 and 4.0 GPAs. We deserve to walk this spring!
