Almost 5,000 Puerto Ricans Died from Hurricane Maria

According to the official government death toll, 64 Puerto Ricans died as a result of Hurricane Maria. Harvard researchers calculated that the actual number is closer to 5,000.

In a new study, researchers found there were 4,645 "excess deaths" from the hurricane, meaning if Puerto Ricans had gotten the help they needed and gotten it in time, these deaths could have been prevented.

The Trump Administration needs to acknowledge the actual death toll, both because it's the humane thing to do and because it could have an impact on the amount of aid given to Puerto Rico.

Congress approved $15.8 million in FEMA aid for both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, but experts estimate that Puerto Rico alone needs $94 billion.

Months after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans are still suffering. They deserve our support and help, and they deserve the truth.
