Michigan Senate Bill 167 Making the Black Swallowtail the official State of MI Butterfly

Did you know that 47 of the 50 states have a state butterfly, state insect or both? Michigan does not. Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. supports MI Senate Bill 167 making the Black Swallowtail the official State of Michigan Butterfly for the following reasons:
The Black Swallowtail can be found throughout the State of Michigan
The Black Swallowtail overwinters as a pupa in Michigan making it an excellent butterfly for school groups to study.
The Black Swallowtail has 2-3 generations per year and it is fairly large, 2-4 inches making fairly east to be seen.
The Black Swallowtail prefers grassy areas filled with Michigan native plants vs tall trees which also makes it easier to be seen and appreciated.
The Black Swallowtail is a pollinator, key to Michigan's agriculture and tourist industries.
