Tell BC Minister of Forestry to Protect Wolves and Grizzlies

BC Ministry of Forestry wants to remove all limitations for wolf hunting in the province, allowing for unlimited hunting and removing a hunting season for these beautiful and necessary animals. Not only that but they want to increase the amount of grizzly bear hunting in the province.

By signing this petition you are giving a voice to the wild, letting the province know that you value the lives of these important predators in BC.

Background

The BC Ministry of Forestry, Lands and Natural Resoure Operations wants to remove limits on how many wolves can be hunted in the Peace Region of BC. They also want to remove a hunting season for wolves so that people could hunt them year round.

Not only that but they want to increase grizzly bear hunting in the region.

According to the CBC, Science Director of the Rainforest Conservation Foundation Chris Dairmont says that the rationale behind the increase in grizzly bear and wolf hunting is not based on good science and relies on best guesses for populations of grizzly bears in the area.

Wolves are vitally important to the ecosystem. They maintain balance of prey species such as deer, elk and caribou which in turn maintains the balance of the plant species. With increased hunting the government runs the risk of putting the ecosystem out of balance making it vulnerable to more disease and pest infestations.

Grizzly bears are also a keystone species and according to the David Suzuki Foundation their numbers are threatened not only by habitat loss and fragmentation but also by human hunting.

We must protect these key species by keeping the current hunting limitations on both animals.

To the Honourable Steve Thomson,

We, the undersigned, demand that you immediately revoke the proposal to remove limitations on wolf hunting in the peace region and that you do not allow increased grizzly bear hunting in the same region.

Both wolves and grizzly bears are vitally important to the balance of the ecosystem and there is no hard evidence that the populations can support increased hunting. We need to protect our top predators in order to maintain a healthy and strong environment.
