Leggings in the Dress Code

My goal is to persuade the school to:

1) Mention the leggings policy IN THE DRESS CODE to avoid students' confusion

2) Not label leggings as a "distraction," but instead take other measures to make sure that the student does not get distracted

The students of Riverwood Middle School understand that most of the amendments in our dress code are necessary for the betterment of our school, but we ask for some revisions to be made.

Female students are constantly confused on whether or not their clothes are suitable enough for their learning environment. A concept is arranged in our school that ensures that the clothing of a student does not distract another student's learning. We understand that students our age can be distracted by the attire of another individual, but are leggings included in that?

Our teachers and staff give us dress codes if we violate any rules regarding appearances in RMS. The penalty for getting a dress code is this: the dress coded student has to be TAKEN OUT from either lunch, one of their classes, or a passing period between classes. Even if they miss part of their lesson.

However, in the dress code, leggings are not explicitly mentioned. But the teachers give us dress codes if "our shirt doesn't completely cover our bottom, if we're wearing leggings." Now, I understand that a rule like this is initiated to make our school a confortable place. But from personal experience, and my fellow classmates' experiences, this rule is a bit confusing.

The dress code isn't directly mentioned in the dress code, so why are the admin calling it a violation if the rule isn't particularly mentioned in the dress code? My classmates and I agree that this isn't fair.

You know what's also not fair? The fact that we have to change what we wear because it's more convenient for the male students' (for the most part) lack of self control. If they feel distracted by a girl's LEGGINGS, how is that the girl's fault? Why are we blaming the girl for intimidating the boy so that he chooses to act upon the choice of a girl?

If you don't want students to be distracted, maybe teach the ones who are "distracted" a lesson about self control. Or, at the least, don't blame the girl for interfering with another person's education, when the only education being interfered with, is the the girl.

Thank you once again.

Here is our school dress code:

"Students at all grade levels may wear shorts, but “short shorts” are forbidden. The length of shorts must be between the knee and mid-thigh. Skirts and dresses must also be mid-thigh length or longer. Girls are not allowed to wear skirts or dresses with slits extending above the mid-thigh area. Spaghetti straps, leotards and halters as an outer garment are not acceptable. Blouses covering tube tops must be buttoned. Earrings are permitted for female students only. No student, male or female, will be allowed to wear jewelry in other pierced areas of the body while at school. Visible tattoos are not permitted. Students must wear shoes. Steel-toe shoes, house slippers, cleats and roller or wheeled shoes are not permitted. In addition, elementary students may not wear flip-flops or heels above one-half inch. Sleepwear may not be worn at school. Excessively loose or tight garments are not acceptable. All clothing should be appropriately fitted. All shirts must be worn so as not to expose the bare chest. Tank tops or undershirts are not to be worn as outer garments. The midriff must not be exposed when a student goes through the normal activities of a school day, including bending, stretching or reaching. Male students are not allowed to wear shirts without sleeves. Elementary students are not allowed to wear makeup. Sunglasses are not allowed to be worn in the school building. Sideburns must be trimmed neatly and not extend below the ear. Mustaches and beards are not allowed. Hairstyles must be neat, clean and well groomed. Hair that is dyed an unnatural color, such as green or orange, is not permitted.

Any form of dress that attracts undue attention, disrupts school, is considered gang related or detracts from the learning process is not acceptable. Administration and faculty have the right to consider any current fashion or fad and determine whether it is appropriate or inappropriate for school. District guidelines state that any form of dress that attracts undue attention, is unsafe, disrupts school or detracts from the learning process is not acceptable. For additional information, please refer to the student handbook. Some campuses have adopted other dress code requirements in addition to district regulations, and this information will be announced by the school."
