Abstinence Only Education-Outdated and Unrealistic

The sexual education program at Massabesic High School is of growing concern to the community of Waterboro, Maine. It has been brought to the attention of students that the current sexual education program is primarily enforcing Abstinence Only education, with a slight emphasis on contraception. This is inefficient information and is ultimately withholding vital and potentially life saving information from students. The goal of this petition is to raise awareness and get parents to be inclined to want the current program to change to a more contraceptive-based educational system.

      • Texas spends more money on abstinence only programs than any other state, but still has the most sexually active high school students

      • In 2006 about 1/3 of all adolescent females because pregnant before age 20, the second highest teen birth rate among developed countries

      • Empirical evidence clearly indicated that when adolescents are present with truthful information about sex they are more likely to act responsibly

      • 1 of every 4 college students have a sexually transmitted disease

These startling statistics show how prevalent sexually transmitted diseases really are. Not educating students is choosing to be naive and preventing them from obtaining this necessary information. Using “scare tactics” to prevent students from engaging in sexual intercourse is in no way effective and in this day in age the situation should be addressed in a mature and beneficial manner.
