We are at a precipice. The Oceans are our lifeline to survival. They aborb one third of our carbon dioxide. They create one half of our oxygen. Yet, we destroy it by bottom trawling every day. It is legal to trawl in protected marine areas. A twenty billion dollar industry subsided by our own governments. Three quarters of a catch are thrown away every day. It is called bycatch. A simple word for a genocide of marine life. The size of the Amazon rainforest is destroyed by bottom trawling fishing every year, but no one is up in arms. They plow through and destroy everything in their path. The Ocean flora and fauna is disappearing. Every animal and plant are affected by bottom trawling. Coastal fishing is gone. This is Ecocide! Destroying an entire ecosystem. Where are the protests? Where are the bans against bottom trawling? We need to give our Oceans a moratorium against commercial fishing. The Oceans can recover, but not at the speed of commercial fishing! The Oceans are a a delicate balance of plants and animals. We need to nuture it, not destroy it. We need to drop concrete barriers to protect against bottom trawling. We need to create no commercial fishing zones.No mining or drilling. What we see today around the world, is the consequences of our inaction! We need to save one third of our Oceans, especially around coastlines and Ocean hot spots for flora and fauna. We barely protect three percent.
