Education Grants Should Not Be Spent on Guns, Secretary DeVos!

The Department of Education is currently exploring a plan to divert money intended to improve schools to go toward firearms for teachers instead.

Schools are severely underfunded as it is, yet Betsy DeVos — the same woman who once said schools should be armed because of grizzly bears — is planning to exploit a loophole in the $1 billion Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants to allocate money towards buying guns for teachers.

Excuse us, but that's not academic enrichment! This money should be spent as intended — to improve the equipment and content of schools in poor districts.

Precedent dictates that Congress give permission to any agency that wants to use federal funds for weapons, but the Education Department is trying to buck tradition for a wholly unnecessary reason.

We call on DeVos and her staff to drop this inane idea immediately — arming teachers is not the key to keeping schools safe!
