Clean Up Bangalore's Toxic Lakes Now Before Another Massive Die-Off

It's a horrible scene: thousands of dead fish floating in Bangalore's Ulsoor lake. Worse still, their deaths could've been avoided if local Indian authorities in the state of Karnataka had fixed a broken dam two years ago. That means toxic sewage has been mixing with lake water for two entire years!

TV Ramachandra, professor at Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Science, explains to Mashable how the thousands of fish died:

"This occurred because of a high amount of organic content in the lake due to untreated sewage. With temperatures rising in the city, there is more biological activity and a reduction of oxygen levels in the water, which caused the deaths."

Sadly, this isn't the only toxic lake in the city and it's not the first die-off. And it won't be the last if local authorities continue to do nothing. Well, they're too busy trying to develop a floating restaurant on Ulsoor lake.

No matter how nice a floating restaurant is, thousands of dead fish will make any meal unappetizing. Local officials need to get their priorities straight (e.g. fixing a broken dam). Sign and share this petition urging the government of Karnataka to clean up the Bangalore's toxic lakes for people and the planet.
