Stop Durham County Council felling a 100-year-old Lawson Cypress Tree

  • af: Gary Scott
  • mottagare: Michelle Hurton - Assistant Planning Officer, The Dean of Durham Cathedral - Michael Sadgrove, Archbishop of Canterbury - Justin Welby and Durham County Council

Felling of this tree is in direct violation of Saved Planning Policy E22 Conservation Areas, and justification is point 3.87 in the city of Durham Plan and E14 on Existing Trees and hedgerows. As a Veteran Tree and Ancient Woodland species, its status  should be, and is, specifically protected under the National Planning Policy Framework. Further, the Natural Environmental and Rural Communities Act 2006  would classify this tree, at its age as irreplaceable.

A 100 year old tree the same age as the Charlie Chaplin Films, the company Speedo and even Tarzan is under threat from been felled by Durham County Council for a view from their bedroom windows which was never there before people bought the town houses opposite the mighty centenarian name Elseee a Lawson Cypress probably the only one in the UK that came all the way from America. This tree is only 30 years younger than the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower. It is even older than the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle yet 12 people including Durham County Council want this tree to be cut down to increase their own views from a bedroom window as it is behind an 8ft brick wall.

Please help me stop an application to remove a 100+ year old Lawson Cypress from Durham City's Conservation Area. This tree is healthy and can live to be 600 years old.

Long story short Cllr Ormerod and 12 residents are trying to fell a 100-year-old tree just for a view from their bedroom window this tree is as old as the company Speedo, Tarzan, Charlie Chaplin and even Traffic Cones but because it is just a tree "nobody" cares about in there eyes so we plan to let the world know that people do care about a 100 year old tree been chopped down and sign this petion to let them know that its not just an ordinary tree "blocking" a house's view of Durham Cathedral.

Tree Preservation Order consent is sought to fell one Cypress Lawson Tree and to replace it with an indigenous deciduous species. The Cypress Lawson Tree is currently protected by a tree preservation order.

The application has been reported to committee by the request of Cllr Ormerod. The reasons for reporting the application to committee are loss of visual amenity for residents and detrimental effect on the conservation area.
