We Want Ms. Payne Back!

  • mottagare: Castle View High School

Ms. Payne is a deaf ASL teacher at Castle View High School who is being denied an interpreter because it is too expensive however, the sub that is in her place has had an interpreter almost every day. She requested an interpreter only once a week
but she was rejected. This was affecting her teaching and compromising the students learning. According to the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) standards, it is up to the institution in question to provide and pay for any necessary sign language interpreting. If an institution does not comply by providing ASL interpreting to meet the needs of a hard of hearing individual, it may suffer serious penalties.

As a deaf individual Ms.Payne has the right to have access to an interpreter whenever needed. Students of Ms. Payne have stopped learning anything since the incident, they are being given quizzes and tests with content they have not learned. These students education is being compromised simply because she can't have an interpreter.
