Protect Endangered Plants from Tar Sands Mining!

Tar sands strip-mining in Alberta, Canada is destroying more and more woodland acres every year, threatening the region's rare plants that fall in the way of development. Tar sands mines currently require environmental assessments, but there are currently no laws to protect threatened plant species, so these assessments do little to help Alberta's ecosystem.

Canada's Species at Risk Act only protects endangered species on federal land, such as national parks, and the Alberta Wildlife Act exists mainly to protect game species, not plants. Though eight plants are listed under the Act, there are no laws designed to punish those who kill or disturb these plants.

The Endangered Species Conservation Committee (ESCC) must place Alberta's ecosystem above industry. They need to protect more of the region's rare plants and create penalties for people who harm these plants. Please sign the petition to urge to ESCC to protect endangered plants from tar sands mining!

We, the undersigned, are concerned about the damage that tar sands strip-mining in Alberta, Canada is doing to the region's plants and ecosystem.

We understand that Canada's Species at Risk Act only protects endangered species on federal land, such as national parks, and the Alberta Wildlife Act exists mainly to protect game species, not plants. Though eight plants are listed under the Act, there are no laws designed to punish those who kill or disturb these plants.

We believe that the ESCC must place Alberta's ecosystem above industry. It is important to protect more of the region's rare plants and create penalties for people who harm these plants. We respectfully urge you to protect endangered plants from tar sands mining. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
