End the Government Double Major GPA Minimum

The GPA requirement of 88% for any Government major wishing to Double Major with another discipline goes against Wesleyan's educational mission. A liberal arts education prides itself on allowing students to pursue vastly different disciplines at the same time. Grades in a course unrelated to Government courses should absolutely not effect ones ability to pursue Government. Should a prospective Neurobiology and Government double major be concerned about his ability to pursue Government while struggling on a Neurobiology test? Should a student struggling in Multi Variable Calculus be thinking in the back of their head that if they don't do well in it they won't be able to do Government? Absolutely not. This simply does not make sense. The department should be striving for committed Government students, regardless of their academic pursuits outside of the department. Should freshmen, who do not yet know what they want to major in and have freedom of choice in their beginning stages (another proclaimed benefit of Wesleyan) be penalized going forward? Arguments made by the department that this requirement forces students to prioritize some passions over others, and this is absolutely anti-liberal arts education. A desire to make the Government department rigorous and thorough does not need to meddle into the pursuits of other departments here at Wesleyan.
