Urge the New South Wales Government to ban coal seam gas mining to protect the environment

Coal seam gas is an unconventional form of gas mining that is alleged to contaminate water sources and cause earthquakes – making it hazardous to the environment and to the health of people and animals.

Now Conservative politicians in New South Wales are pushing for a ban on coal seam gas mining, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

After losing the seat of Ballina and coming close to losing the seats of Tweed and Lismore, several MPs from the National Party are heeding local concerns on coal seam gas and working to ban coal seam gas extraction in the Northern Rivers region.

Newly elected member of the upper house, Ben Franklin, said: "The community thinks it's inappropriate for the Northern Rivers and I support that."

National MP Chris Gulaptis shares Franklin's view: "It's the biggest issue of concern coming out of the election," he said. "It would be wrong to ignore it — the community wants a gas-field free Northern Rivers."

The environment needs to be protected and the wishes of the people of New South Wales should be respected.
