Stop the Water Column Leases

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources presented a proposed water column lease that will encompass 76.6 acres more or less in Calvert Bay, St. Mary's County Maryland for the purpose of conducting oyster farming.   A water column lease allows floating and/or submerged cages to be placed in the leased area to grow and harvest a mutation of our native oyster known as a Triploid. Triploids do not reproduce so they do not help revive our deminishing naturally growing oyster.

The presented proposal for a water column lease in Calvert Bay will make the area unnavigable and non-harvestable by local commercial waterman and recreational water enthusiasts alike. It will prevent local watermen from utilizing the area further stressing their incomes. Recreational use will be extremely limited. Boaters, kayakers, jet skiers, duck hunters and the like will no longer be able to use the area without concerns of water hazards.

Please help us stop this and other water column lease in Maryland waters!

Please Maryland, USA residents only! Thanks for your support!
