Help Save the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is home to at least 250 species of birds, including the largest colony of wading birds in the Everglades. But the state of Florida is considering terminating a lease agreement that allows the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to manage and protect this key piece of habitat.

If Florida ends the lease agreement, the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge will no longer be managed to benefit wildlife – it will effectively cease to exist.

Tell Florida Governor Rick Scott to protect the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge!

Dear Governor Scott,

Subject: Don't destroy the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

As a Defender of Wildlife, I am writing to urge you not to end the lease agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for management of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is a national treasure that protects wildlife, migratory birds and waterfowl and provides clean water for communities in South Florida. It is essential habitat for more than 250 species of birds, including the largest colony of wading birds in the Everglades.

Every dollar spent on the Loxahatchee Refuge translates into $6.81 dollars of economic activity in the region, spurred by recreational use of the Refuge. The Refuge attracts 300,000 native Floridians and visitors annually who watch birds and engage in a variety of wildlife-related recreation, producing $1.9 million in sales tax revenue and supporting more than 100 local jobs.

Governor Scott, you have championed conservation of the Everglades since you arrived in office. Please do not be responsible for the destruction of the only remaining original Everglades in Palm Beach County. Direct the South Florida Water Management District to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to do the necessary work to manage and preserve the Loxahatchee as a national wildlife refuge.
