Upon meeting Danny for the first time, you'd never know that a few years ago, he could not read. An intelligent man who overcame an unstable childhood, Danny learned many trades and became very skilled, but was ashamed of his illiteracy.
The older Danny got, the more barriers he faced because of his inability to read. When his wife suggested reaching out to Project Adult Literacy Society (PALS), a program funded by United Way of the Alberta Capital Region, he immediately agreed.
Having recently completed a detox program, Danny was motivated by a strong desire to better understand AA literature, and spent many hours studying. Today, he remains committed to PALS, no longer as a student but as a volunteer.
