Mr. President, This Thanksgiving Pardon the Polar Bear

Instead of pardoning a gobbler this year, we think President Obama should pardon a polar bear. So the Center's own Frostpaw the Polar Bear is making a special pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. next week.

Starting Nov. 21, he'll be camped out in front of the White House every day till Thanksgiving delivering an urgent and unmistakable message: Reject Keystone XL and phase out other deadly fossil fuels driving polar bears -- and the rest of us -- into hot water.

If it's built, Keystone XL would carry up to 35 million gallons of oil every day. And it's no ordinary oil -- this would be some of the dirtiest fuel on the planet, strip mined from Canada's tar sands oil fields.

The pipeline would cut through rivers and streams as well as key wildlife habitats for at least 20 imperiled species -- including swift foxes and whooping cranes.

Keystone XL will push us toward a climate disaster we can't avoid and mean game over for Frostpaw's fellow bears and their Arctic home.

That's why we're headed to the White House on Nov. 21 to stand with Frostpaw and help deliver his crucial message. Won't you join us?

Sign today to help us call on President Obama to pardon the polar bear for Thanksgiving and reject Keystone XL.
President Obama,

Last November, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, you gave a special second chance to Cobbler the turkey with a presidential pardon.

This year I urge you to extend that tradition and pardon the polar bear. Reject the Keystone XL Pipeline.

[You comment will be added here]

The science on climate change is clear: If we don't rapidly reduce our dependence on dirty fossil fuels, we may have no way to prevent a climate disaster.

And Keystone XL will take us in exactly the wrong direction. Every day the pipeline would carry up to 35 million gallons of tar-sands oil -- a fuel that produces twice as much greenhouse gas per barrel as conventional oil. It would contribute 3.7 million to 20.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

And Keystone doesn't just make the climate crisis worse; it will also put our wildlife, air, water and wild places at an incredible risk. We can't let that happen.

Please pardon the polar bear this Thanksgiving and take a strong stance against climate change: Reject the Keystone XL pipeline.

Thank you,
