If Koko had her way, all humans would be "polite." This is Koko's way of saying that she wishes all people were caring and compassionate toward gorillas.

You see, as a unique ambassador for her species, Koko is the only gorilla that can communicate with us in our own language (Koko is able to sign over 1,000 words) and ask us to help save gorillas. And, it is through the inter-species communication work of the Gorilla Foundation that we have been able to share with the world the commonalities that we humans have with gorillas. In fact, when Koko met with Robin Williams (several years ago) they shared something extraordinary: laughter!

Koko also understands that free-living gorillas and other great apes are critically endangered. They face constant threats from poachers hunting for bushmeat, habitat loss, and contagious diseases. Without our help, these magnificent animals stand on the brink of extinction.
