Every Massachusetts Student Deserves Debt-Free College

Getting a college degree has a profound effect on a person's income and upward mobility. The avergae college-educated millennial makes more than $45,000 per year, while those with just a high school degree earn just $28,000 on average. The difference only grows over a lifetime, which is why we need to ensure every child has access to higher education.

But, the financial barriers to college are staggering and growing. States have cut back on funding and raised tuition. Federal grants have stagnated as demand for them has grown. College has never been more important and less afforable. For low-income students, the barriers can be prohibitive, stymieing their chance to rise out of poverty.

We need a system that allows higher education to be affordable and accessible to everyone, regardless of socio-economic background. That's why we're calling for debt-free college. Ten states, including Massachusetts already have proposals to make public universities more affordable, but none have passed yet. We can lead the way.
