Stop Methane Emissions to Fight Climate Change

The US oil and gas industry releases 13 million metric tons of methane from its operations each year. Without strong methane pollution standards, the industry is projected to emit 4.6 million more tons of methane in 2025 – the equivalent of operating 100 coal fired power plants for a year.

Methane has 86 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. 86 times. This makes limiting the amount of methane released into the atmosphere absolutely critical in the fight against climate change.

Unfortunately, the Trump administration recently introduced a rollback of methane limits for the oil and gas industry. This is an egregious example of the prioritization of corporate profit over the health of the planet and all its inhabitants.

If we are serious about addressing global warming and combating the effects of climate change, we must fight for strong federal regulations on methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. Tell the Trump administration that combating the effects of climate change is more important than the profits of corporate polluters.

To whom it may concern:

I strongly oppose the elimination of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2016 New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for methane from oil and gas operations.

Rolling back these standards will lead to increased methane emissions, which accelerate global warming, and increased emissions of toxic pollutants and smog-forming compounds that jeopardize the health of communities living near oil and gas infrastructure.

Evidence shows that oil and gas companies cannot be trusted to monitor and control methane leaks from their operations. The few existing voluntary pollution reduction programs have proven ineffective at addressing emissions from the entire industry. Without federal oversight, these companies will not implement the cost-effective solutions to detect and repair gas leaks. The existing commonsense standards ensure companies reduce wasteful leaks that damage their bottom line and threaten our communities.

I oppose this proposal and encourage the EPA to retain the NSPS for methane emissions from the oil and gas industry as finalized in 2016, and to move forward on regulating emissions from existing wells. These regulations protect public health, limit carbon emissions, and are cost-effective to implement.
