Add Your Voice: Protect the Air Your Family Breathes From Methane

Did you know that when NASA first detected a giant methane "hotspot" hovering over New Mexico's San Juan Basin in 2014, experts thought their equipment was malfunctioning? It's that big and that serious.
Methane is a super pollutant that is an even more dangerous greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide — in terms of both climate change and quality of the air we breathe. It escapes with other pollutants like volatile organic compounds that contribute to smog formation and carcinogens like benzene. That means when methane is leaked into our air, it can spike asthma attacks and cancer rates.
Yet, oil and gas producers that contribute to it don’t think we need strong rules to limit the pollution. Help fight back and tell the BLM that you support strong methane capture rules to protect our health and resources now.
The majority of New Mexicans support protecting our air and climate with a strong rule. At the BLM's recent public hearing in Farmington, the citizens who spoke were 2 to 1 in favor of rules that will curb emissions of the super pollutant methane into New Mexico's air. New Mexicans are directly impacted by methane emissions, so it's important for the BLM to listen.
Help protect the air you and your family breathe and tell the BLM that you support strong methane capture rules. Together, we can convince our decision-makers to protect our health and reduce waste.
Thank you for taking this important first step to begin reducing methane pollution from leaks, venting and flaring by the oil and gas industry. I encourage BLM to strengthen the rule to ensure that the final rule minimizes waste and ensures a fair return to taxpayers on an important New Mexico resource.
Oil and gas companies operating on federal and tribal lands are wasting more than $330 million worth of tax-payer owned natural gas each year through leaks and the wasteful practices of venting and flaring — including $42.7 million worth in New Mexico since 2009.
By taking action to reduce venting, flaring, and leaks from both current and future projects, BLM is setting an important precedent for strong action on all sources of oil and gas pollution.
Nearly half of all methane waste could be eliminated today with cost-effective fixes. These new standards will create jobs and boost local economies while reducing other air pollutants like volatile organic compounds that contribute to smog formation and carcinogens like benzene. These pollutants are connected to spikes in asthma attacks and even cancer.
By requiring these commonsense solutions and implementing a strong natural gas waste rule, the BLM can end natural gas waste from drilling operations while generating revenue and creating jobs.
