Dismiss the Superintendent Who Forced LGBT Student to Read the Bible as Punishment

By his own admission, North Bend, Oregon Superintendent Bill Yester disciplined a gay student by forcing the teenager to read from the Bible on multiple occasions.

Not only is it inappropriate for a public school to require students to read religious texts (particularly when it's clearly meant to shame the student,) but by devising punishments on the basis of a student's sexual orientation, Yester is enacting discrimination.

The bottom line is that a superintendent should demonstrate much better judgment and understanding of the laws. We call on the Oregon Department of Education to hold Yester accountable and replace him with someone with more sensitivity and a suitably secular approach to dealing with public school students.
