Keep Argentina's Santa Cruz River Healthy

  • af: WWF

The Santa Cruz River, the last free-flowing glacial river running from the Andes to the sea, relies on Lake Argentino which depends on several glaciers including Perito Moreno — one of Argentina's most important glaciers. The Argentine government is currently planning to build a hydroelectric complex that will alter the natural course of this ecosystem.

If the Condor Cliff-La Barrancosa dams are built as planned, the Santa Cruz River and the Perito Moreno Glacier as we know them may be destroyed. We still have time to put a stop to this project, but we need you to speak up.

Sign our petition to President Macri of Argentina to keep the Santa Cruz healthy and free-flowing.

Dear Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina:

Please stop the planned dams on the Santa Cruz River.

Damming the Santa Cruz River, the last free-flowing glacial river running from the Andes to the sea, would affect its course. Altering its course would change the natural quota of the Argentino Lake. This action may destroy the Perito Moreno Glacier as we know it.

If the Condor Cliff-La Barrancosa dams are built, we could lose an UNESCO heritage site, and one of the most known and beautiful landmarks of Argentina.

This project also would flood several sites of archeological importance, and bring species such as as the hooded grebe to the brink of extinction.

I ask you to halt this project.

Please keep the Santa Cruz healthy, flowing free, and stop the dams.

Sincerely,
