We are calling on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to quickly pass more robust national protections from methane and other health-harming emissions associated with the oil and gas industry.
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is a significant accelerator of climate change as it is more than 25 times as potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.
Methane emissions have many negative impacts on the environment and human health. They contribute to smog and air pollution, which can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, and other health issues. Methane's role in the climate crisis means it is also responsible for more long term impacts of climate change like more frequent and severe natural disasters, disrupted ecosystems, and decreased food and water security.
While the current draft of the rule has certain protections, it does not go far enough in ensuring harmful methane emissions are not impacting the health of surrounding communities. We call on the EPA to strengthen the rule and implement additional measures to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas industry to ensure we are protecting public health.
