Help Protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from Oil Drilling

President Bush and Congressional leaders are exploiting high gas prices to rush through legislation that would industrialize the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for the sake of oil company profits.

They're trying to sacrifice our nation's premiere wildlife sanctuary in order to "solve" problems at the gas pump. But the Bush Administration's own Energy Department says that drilling in the Arctic Refuge will save consumers only two cents per gallon at the pump - 20 years from now!

Meanwhile, the oil companies would line their pockets with billions more in profits. The oil companies win, while everyone else, including an irreplaceable Arctic ecosystem, the vital birthing ground for polar bears, arctic wolves and grizzlies, loses.

Click on the image and watch Robert Redford as he talks about the urgency to block this legislation in a short video featuring the wildlife and wilderness of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And then join us in asking Senate Majority Leader Frist not to move ahead with any legislation that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.
Dear Senate Majority Leader Frist,

I urge you not to move ahead with any legislation that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling under the pretext of dealing with high gas prices.

Recent oil spills in Alaska underscore the fact that oil drilling is a dirty business that has no place in our most sensitive wildlife habitats. And turning the Arctic Refuge into an industrial wasteland won't even make a dent in gas prices. According to the Department of Energy, drilling in the Refuge would lower prices at the pump by just one penny a gallon twenty years from now. Congress should not be sacrificing our greatest sanctuary for Arctic wildlife for the sake of one cent -- especially when we could save eleven times as much oil through an increase in fuel economy standards.
Our nation will never drill our way to lower gas prices and energy independence. But we can secure our energy future by reducing our out-of-control appetite for oil.

I call on you to make a national commitment to save at least 2.5 million barrels of oil per day by 2015 and set us on a path toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. You can do that by sponsoring and advancing the bipartisan "Fuel Choices for American Security Act."

Please solve this energy crisis by saving, not destroying, our natural heritage.
