Eliminate the SAT & Achieve Real Equality and Integration in California Education

Petition Target: University of California Schools

Having reversed the ban on affirmative action in the University of California, our new civil rights movement now has the opportunity to fight to win integration and equality in education, beginning with the UC and ending use of the SAT.

We, the undersigned supporters of integration:

  • 1. Reject the resegregation of the UC into a two-tier system and deplore the dramatic drops in the UC’s hiring of minority and women faculty.
  • 2. Call for a substantial increase in under-represented minority enrollment at the flagship UC campuses (Berkeley, LA, San Diego) and at the UC law and medical schools;
  • 3. Call for the end of the use of the SAT I in UC admissions;
  • 4. Call for a substantial increase in the number of under-represented minority faculty hired by the UC system;
  • 5. Call for a substantial increase in the number of women faculty hired by the UC system;
  • 6. Call for full equality of opportunity and integration throughout the California education system.
Petition Target: University of California Schools

WHEREAS:
1. California is now a majority minority state. Despite our state’s increasing diversity, segregation and inequality have increased.

2. In the wake of the July 1995 vote of the University of California Regents to ban affirmative action (SP-1 and SP-2) and Proposition 209, there has been a narrowing of opportunity for Chicana/o, Latina/o, black, Native American, and other under-represented minorities in education, employment and contracting.

3. A precipitous drop in under-represented minority enrollment and a dramatic decline in hiring of under-represented minority and women faculty at the flagship UC schools have followed these bans on affirmative action.

The SAT test requirement for UC admissions unfairly and unreasonably excludes vastly disproportionate numbers of under-represented minority high school students from enrolling at the flagship UC schools.

4. On May 16, 2001, under mass pressure from a new civil rights movement, the Regents unanimously reversed their ban on affirmative action.

5. The reversal of the ban creates the possibility of widening opportunities for under-represented minorities and women throughout the state. The integration of America’s educational institutions is imperative to realizing our nation’s aspiration to equality and democracy.

THEREFORE, we, the undersigned supporters of integration:

1. Reject the resegregation of the UC into a two-tier system and deplore the dramatic drops in the UC’s hiring of minority and women faculty.
2. Call for a substantial increase in under-represented minority enrollment at the flagship UC campuses (Berkeley, LA, San Diego) and at the UC law and medical schools;
3. Call for the end of the use of the SAT I in UC admissions;
4. Call for a substantial increase in the number of under-represented minority faculty hired by the UC system;
5. Call for a substantial increase in the number of women faculty hired by the UC system;
6. Call for full equality of opportunity and integration throughout the California education system.
