West Leads the Way Combating Climate Change

Some states are working overtime to prevent climate change. But strong climate change prevention initiatives should not be limited to only seven out of fifty states. We must unite as one country to fight global warming.
Governors from California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Montana have joined forces with leaders of four Canadian provinces to reduce greenhouse gas emissions above and beyond U.S. federal limits. The seven states and four provinces form the Western Climate Initiative (WCI) which pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent of 2005 levels by 2020.
WCI's plan for implementation includes requirements for cleaner cars, more energy-efficient appliances, less-polluting fuels and more reliance on wind and solar energy. WCI is also looking at and learning from past successes and failures by similar groups around the world.
WCI has recognized that a broader market is more effective than single states acting alone. So, why not act in solidarity as one nation, or even one continent? Tell the next Secretary of Energy to act fervently to address global climate change, taking a cue from WCI.
Dear Secretary of Energy,
It is time to move forward to combat climate change. Federal standards are not strong enough, and individual states have proved that even more can be done. Seven U.S. states have joined forces with four Canadian provinces to create the Western Climate Initiative, which proves that stricter standards can be successful.
WCI pledges to reduce greenhouse gases by 15 percent of 2005 levels by 2020. These levels are more ambitious than current federal standards, but they are attainable. They plan to execute the new stringent levels by requiring cleaner cars, more energy-efficient appliances, less-polluting fuels and more reliance on wind and solar energy. These are initiatives that our nation as a whole should be taking, not just some states.

WCI employs the idea that acting individually is not as strong as acting together. Please act urgently and boldly to stand strong against global warming. Take a cue from WCI and band together to enforce strict emissions regulations, and initiate cleaner energy technology.
