Help Save Marine Animals

Each year whales, sea lions, sea turtles and other marine wildlife find themselves in danger. Stranded, beached, injured — dozens of animals are caught in emergencies that can threaten their lives or public safety.

In the case of large marine wildlife like whales, a lack of professional response can quickly create a dangerous situation. Beached whales can injure or kill people, while the bacterial contamination poses an additional public health risk.

In many cases, these animals can be helped, and even when they cannot, a quick response can uncover the reasons why they are in danger — the first step towards preventing future problems.

I urge our government to make marine animal emergency response a priority. The Government should increase support for marine emergency networks across Canada. This will ensure every marine emergency gets a quick response, that helps us understand the threats facing these animals.
