Republicans: Stop Defending Big Oil

The Obama administration recently announced that the Deepwater Horizon explosion is the worst oil disaster in American history, exceeding the Exxon Valdez spill.

Around the same time, Republican Representative Don Young (AK) dismissed the oil spill catastrophe by saying, "This is not an environmental disaster, and I will say that again and again because it is a natural phenomena. Oil has seeped into this ocean for centuries."

Representative Young could not be more wrong. The recent Deepwater Horizon oil spill is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, manmade disaster in history. Send a letter to Representative Don Young urging him to stop defending Big Oil.

Dear Representative Young,

The Obama administration recently announced that the Deepwater Horizon explosion is the worst oil disaster in American history, exceeding the Exxon Valdez spill. Officials estimated that the gusher spewed between 15 and 40 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Yet, around the same time, you declared that the oil pumping into the Gulf is "not an environmental disaster."

The rate in which oil is spewing into the Gulf is not natural and the impact of the accident will not only threaten the fragile ecosystem of Louisiana's coastline, but also the local economy that depends on fishing and tourism.

Representative Young, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is one of the biggest, if not the biggest manmade disaster in history.

As your constituent, I urge you to stop defending Big Oil and start taking steps to prevent another oil related catastrophe from occurring again.
