Don't Let the Ultra-Conservatives Rewrite History

According to the Texas Board of Education, several people, events and ideas lacking in "stature, impact, and overall contributions" should be omitted from textbooks. They include:
* Thomas Jefferson's ideas on the separation of church and state.
* Cesar Chavez, civil rights activist and founder of United Farm Workers.
* Thurgood Marshall, lawyer who won Brown vs. Board of Education, and the first African American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
People like Phyllis Schlafy, on the other hand, who compared sex education classes to "sales parties for abortions" and who said sexual harassment isn't a problem for "virtuous" women, will be included in these school books. These changes could reverberate throughout the country, since
Texas is home to one of America's largest textbook markets.
Don't let anti-science, conservative extremists impose their racist, sexist, and ethnocentric
beliefs on our nation's children. Tell Rick Perry, Texas governor, to override the Texas
BOE's attempts to rewrite and manipulate history.
Dear Governor Perry,
The Texas Board of Education recently voted to remove several historically significant people, events, and ideas from their textbooks: a move that will reverberate throughout the country, since Texas is home to one of America's largest textbook markets.
Among the pieces of history that will be omitted from textbooks are Thomas Jefferson's ideas on the separation of church and state, and Thurgood Marshall, who argued in favor of
Brown vs. Board of Education and was the first African American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Colonial leader Anne Hutchinson and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez, for whom Texas celebrates a state holiday, will also be excluded.

The Texas BOE is rewriting history through racist, sexist, and ethnocentric lenses. Don't let our children be taught anti-science, right-wing ideals by extremists. Override the BOE's attempts to manipulate history.
