From March 31 to November 20 2009, from 6pm to 7am, trucks and buses are being detoured off of Interstate 80 and onto rural stretches of SR 20 and 49 through Grass Valley, Nevada City, North Auburn, and other communities along the way. Truck traffic through these towns has already been as high as 500 trucks per night, and maybe more.

Could this detour have been kept on the interstate instead? Are the resulting costs to Nevada County really cheaper than reworking the detour to stay along the interstate?

We the undersigned are disappointed that the noise, air quality, health, and economic impacts of the I-80 20/49 detour on the residents of the 20 and 49 corridor were not taken into account by Caltrans. If they were quantified correctly ahead of time, we do not think this detour would exist. If the costs to residents were indeed factored into the detour decision, we believe it would have been cheaper to keep the interstate on the interstate.
