Ban dog and cat fur

Each year, approximately 2 million dogs and cats are cruelly slaughtered for their fur.

Dog and cats are raised and killed in China, Thailand and the Philippines. Their skins are used to make trim on coats, toys, hats and figurines and these products are then exported all over the world.

Labels are misleading (ie. dog fur could be labelled as Asian wolf fur) while cat fur could be labelled as rabbit). In some cases, the fur is trimmed, dyed and processed to resemble faux fur. In many cases, labels are omitted altogether.

The Canadian Textile and Labelling Act does not require the labelling of animal pelts or hides. Textile regulations only require that the existence of fur fibres, once removed from the skin of an animal and woven with textile fibres, be declared on a label.

Although many European Countries and the United States have banned cat and dog fur, Canada has left our doors wide open. It remains legal to import and sell dog and cat fur in Canada.

Please sign this petition to tell Prime Minister Stephen Harper, International Trade Minister Edward Fast and Agricultural Minister Honorable Gerry Ritz to ban the import and sale of dog and cat fur in Canada.
