In excess of 10 million animals are raised for food most of which undergo unnecessary suffering, are raised in conditions suited for maximum profit without consideration for their welfare, and are denied even their basic needs.
Humane Farm Animal Care is a national non-profit organization created to improve the lives of farm animals by setting rigorous standards, conducting annual inspections, and certifying their humane treatment. Some of their standards include:
- Managers and caretakers must be thoroughly trained, skilled and competent in animal husbandry and welfare, and have good working knowledge of their system and the livestock in their care.
- Cages, crates and tie stalls are among the forbidden practices, and animals must be free to do what comes naturally. For example, chickens are able to flap their wings and dust bathe, and pigs have the space to move around and root.
- Animals have ample space, shelter and gentle handling to limit stress (the minimum standard for the size of range area concerning birds is 2.5 acres per every thousand birds).
- Sufficient protection from weather elements and an environment that promotes well being.
- Ample fresh water and a healthy diet of quality feed, without added antibiotics or hormones.
- The producer meets standards and applies them to animals from birth through slaughter.
Humane farm Animal Care are endorsed by many humane organizations, among them The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Animal Rescue League of Boston, World Society for the Protection of Animals, etc.
I know it doesn’t take care of the problem altogether, but it greatly alleviates the unnecessary physical and emotional suffering that a farm animal would endure otherwise.
