Help Save Community Based Substance Abuse Treatment C
Community based substance abuse treatment centers, or Social Model Programs are grassroots programs that were created mostly by people in recovery from alcoholism or drug addiction as a response to the lack of services in communities across the country. Most are small programs usually located in residential communities and run in houses in those communities. The majority were 12-Step oriented and resident run. They were low cost and meant to help individuals learn the basics of recovery before returning to work or back home. The goal was always to be self-sufficient and to help the clients become self-supporting. Over the years as government funding became available many of these programs began accepting government funding to expand services and capacity. Now as this source of funding is cut these programs are being faced with severe shortfalls in funding and those that relied entirely on government grants are having to cut services or close altogether. Help save community based treatment programs in your community by asking our representatives to fully fund these programs at current levels. Remind them that for every dollar invested in treatment society saves at least $7. Treatment works and it not only saves money, it saves lives, restores families and makes us all safer.
